Back in the 1960s, I had my favorite TV programs. The Addams Family wasn't one of them. I was more in tune to the Munsters. To me, the Addams Family was more silly than funny. But there was one character on the show that I really liked...Lurch!

Lurch was the house butler. He was tall and lean and not very talkative. About the only thing that he said was, when a member of the household pulled the hangman's noose, Lurch would be there instantly and report, "You rang?!" Lurch was actually dead. He was a corpse.

The other actors in the show were okay, but Lurch was 'the guy'. Everyone just seemed to laugh as soon as he entered the scene. The actor who played Lurch was Ted Cassidy, a seasoned character actor who we had seen before and after the Addams Family. Ted died about a decade after the show's run. He was only 46-years old. Since the show's cancelation, there has been several re-makes. But Lurch has never been the same. As with most everything else, there was only one true Lurch and Cassidy was him.
